THE 11TH EDITION OF THE ICONIC KROMME DESCENT

Will the trophy remain in the Eastern Cape in 2025? It’s all about teamwork in this thrilling event. Get ready for the Kromme Descent 2025, the 11th edition of South Africa’s only stage-race swimming event. This two-day competitive swim takes place on the pristine Kromme River in the Eastern Cape, beginning in the river’s scenic upper reaches and ending in the vibrant canals of St Francis Bay. It’s not just a challenging swim—it’s a rare opportunity to navigate the full length of this stunning river.

Event Details: The Kromme Descent is a team event, with each team consisting of two members. Teams can be male, female, or mixed, and all participants must be at least 18 years old. Spaces are limited, so be sure to secure your spot early!

Don’t have a confirmed partner yet, enter with a team name and first team member information so long, to secure an entry. We also know that life happens and partners can be changed out, should the need arise.

Cost:

  • Early Entry: R2300 per team (1 Nov 2024 to 15 Feb 2025)
  • Standard Entry: R2600 per team (16 Feb 2025 to 25 Apr 2025)
  • Late Entry: R2600 per team (26 Apr 2025 to 10 May 2025). No t-shirts included, but they can be ordered separately after the race.

Event Duration:

  • 2 Days: 17th & 18th May 2025
  • Distance: Approx. 13km down the Kromme River

Meal Inclusions:

  • 17th May (Day 1): Lunch and limited beer/cider for swimmers after the first swim.
  • 18th May (Day 2): Lunch and limited beer/cider for swimmers at the prize-giving.
  • Fruit, rusks, and coffee/tea will be provided at the start of both days.

Accommodation: Not included.

Proposed Itinerary:

Friday (16th May):

  • Registration: 18h00 – 20h00 at River Club (Kit handout, indemnity form, and Sunday meal choice).
  • River Club is a fully licensed restaurant/bar. Enjoy a dinner here after registration, for your own account.
  • Location: River Club St Francis Bay, Candlewood Cl, St Francis Bay, 6312.

Saturday (17th May):

  • Late Registration: Time TBC at River Kaya (Kit handout, indemnity, and meal choice for Sunday).
  • Race Start: Time TBC – The race begins at River Kaya, with a 6.5 km swim to River View Estate.
  • Finish: River View Estate.
  • Start and Finish Locations: Signposted on Oyster Bay Road.
  • Post-Race: Lunch and limited beer/cider for swimmers. Family and supporters are welcome to bring their own refreshments and picnic, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere.

Sunday (18th May):

  • Coffee & Tea & Rusks: Served at River View Estate before the race.
  • Race Briefing: Time TBC.
  • Race Start: Time TBC – Swim from River View Estate to The Cove (approx. 6.5 km).
  • Finish: The Cove, at the entrance to the St Francis Bay canals.
  • Prize-Giving & Lunch: At River Club, 12:30 – Lunch and limited beer/cider for swimmers. Family and supporters can enjoy meals at the on-site restaurant.

Firstly, You will Need to Register for this Adventure Swimming

You will need to register well in advance, as spaces are limited to 75 teams only. And the event is always fully booked. It’s a 2 team event, which can be made up of male, female or male and female participants.

Secondly, You will need the Right Equipment

The right equipment, includes a wetsuit, goggles, and a swim cap.

Finally, you will need to be in good physical shape

Besides being in good physical condition you will also need to be prepared to undergo some rigorous training in the lead-up to the event.

If you are up for the challenge, the rewards are well worth it. You will come away from the event with a newfound sense of accomplishment, having tested your limits and overcome your fears. You will also have made new friends and forged new connections, united by your shared experience of adventure swimming in the Kromme River.
