Open Water Swimming Wetsuits

FAQ’s

I would like to order a wetsuit but am undecided between MK2 Comp and MK3 Elite. What is the advantage of the MK3 Elite?

It depends on your needs. Both wetsuits are well suited for competition and both are the same thickness. They are however made from different types of neoprene.

The MK3 Elite is made from Yamamoto neoprene and the MK2 Comp is made from Jako neoprene.

If you want the maximum advantage then the MK3 Elite is our most flexible and most buoyant wetsuit. It has Aerodome panels (neoprene that contains small air pockets) on the chest and thighs which gives it extra buoyancy.

The MK2 Comp gives more than enough buoyancy and flexibility but is more durable and therefore more suitable for higher usage.

Do I need a wetsuit for open water swimming?

Wearing a wetsuit is not always essential for open-water swimming, as it primarily serves the purposes of providing warmth and buoyancy. In some competitive open-water swimming events, the usage of wetsuits is prohibited. Similarly, in triathlons, wetsuits are not allowed if the water temperature exceeds 22 degrees Celsius. Nonetheless, if you are unaccustomed to cold water or seek additional buoyancy as a novice swimmer, wearing a wetsuit is recommended. Additionally, if you wish to compete in a triathlon swim where your opponents are wearing wetsuits, it is imperative that you wear one to remain competitive. The extra buoyancy from a wetsuit can result in a better body position and faster swimming, providing a disadvantage for those without a wetsuit.

How tight should my wetsuit fit me?

For optimal performance during swimming, your wetsuit should fit comfortably without hindering your movements. Wearing a wetsuit that is too tight can lead to shoulder fatigue, while one that is too loose can fill with water. When putting on a wetsuit, it should fit snugly but not uncomfortably. If you experience choking or difficulty raising your arms, the wetsuit is likely too small. Keep in mind that the wetsuit will loosen a bit once you enter the water. To make final adjustments, allow a little water to enter through the neck area, and then work the suit up into the crotch area for a snug fit. Push the sleeves up slightly to relieve pressure on the shoulder area.

Will a wetsuit affect how fast I swim and why?

When swimming with a wetsuit, your speed can be impacted. The wetsuit's 5mm chest and torso panel and 3mm lower-leg panel provide additional buoyancy that improves your body position in the water. This, in turn, reduces drag, enabling you to move forward more efficiently and ultimately swim faster.

What is the maximum thickness allowed for a swimming wetsuit?

Competitive open-water swimming and triathlons have a maximum wetsuit thickness of 5mm to ensure a level playing field for all participants. Thicker wetsuits would provide more buoyancy, resulting in faster swim times, providing an unfair advantage.

How long should my wetsuit last me?

The lifespan of a wetsuit is determined by the frequency of use and the level of care provided. Generally, a wetsuit that is well-maintained can last up to 3 years. Although it may still be usable beyond this period, neoprene gradually deteriorates over time, resulting in reduced buoyancy and flexibility. It may also harden, which can affect its overall performance.

How do I care for my wetsuit?

To maintain your wetsuit's condition, it is crucial to follow the care instructions provided. After each use, rinse the wetsuit thoroughly with fresh water and ensure it dries completely both inside and out before storing it in a cool place. Ideally, hang it over a rail to dry, but avoid exposing it to direct sunlight for extended periods. It is also recommended to avoid hanging it on a hanger for an extended period, as this can affect its shape.

What is Aerodome Neoprene?

Aerodome neoprene consists of two layers of neoprene sandwiched together, with small air cavities in between. This unique design enhances the neoprene's buoyancy properties, making it more effective in keeping you afloat in the water.

Is it difficult to put on a swimming wetsuit?

It's important for swimming wetsuits to fit snugly, which may take longer than putting on other types of wetsuits. Therefore, take your time when putting on the wetsuit, and if possible, avoid doing so in a hot and sweaty environment. This will ensure that you achieve the optimal fit for the wetsuit.

Does the wetsuit loosen up in the water?

It's normal for a wetsuit to feel looser once you're in the water. To achieve the optimal fit, it's recommended to allow some water to enter through the collar when you enter the water. This will help you feel the wetsuit loosen on your skin, allowing you to make small adjustments and ensure that the suit is snug in all the right areas.

What thickness are Blu Smooth wetsuits?

Our full wetsuits (with arms) are specifically designed for competition and feature large 5mm panels in the torso and thigh areas for maximum buoyancy and performance. The wetsuits also have a combination of 1.5mm and 3mm thick panels to ensure flexibility and freedom of movement. On the other hand, our sleeveless wetsuits have a uniform thickness of 3mm throughout. These wetsuits are ideal for fitness or training swimming in warmer temperatures as they offer less buoyancy and are not recommended for competition use.

Will a wetsuit help my swimming?

Wearing a wetsuit increases your buoyancy in the water, preventing your legs from dropping and enabling you to maintain a straight body position. This reduces the need to focus on staying afloat, allowing you to concentrate more on your swimming stroke.

What is smoothskin neoprene?

Smoothskin is a specially treated neoprene that offers excellent insulation properties. Unlike traditional neoprene, Smoothskin does not feature an outside lining, making it more water repellent and reducing water absorption.

What is an SCS coating?

The application of an SCS coating layer on a wetsuit reduces friction in the water and enhances its durability.
